Just for Laughs has lured another comedy superstar to town — but for a show after this year’s festival. Sebastian Maniscalco, who has made his mark at festivals past, hits the Bell Centre Nov. 15 on his You Bother Me North American tour, which launches in September.
As the tour title suggests, Maniscalco’s largely physical and generally hysterical comedy focuses on his issues with the idiosyncrasies of others, particularly family and friends.
Maniscalco has been on a roll of late: he just completed his highly successful Stay Hungry tour, including four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. The show has now become a Netflix special.
In addition, Maniscalco had a plum part in the Oscar-winning Green Book, and is soon to surface again on Netflix in the Martin Scorsese film The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Plus, he is the bestselling author of the appropriately titled bio Stay Hungry.
With Evenko now a co-owner of Just for Laughs, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that more comics are being booked for the Bell Centre. In years gone by, it was just stars like Russell Peters, Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld (who happens to consider Maniscalco to be his favourite comic) who could be counted on to draw crowds at the Bell Centre. But this year, in addition to Maniscalco, it has already been announced that Adam Sandler will make a pre-Just for Laughs stop there on June 8, while Trevor Noah will play the arena during JFL on July 26.
Then again, Maniscalco is hugely popular in these parts, particularly with Montreal’s Italian community. He sold a total of nearly 13,000 tickets for four shows at Place des Arts during his last visit here, in January 2018 for the North American launch of the Stay Hungry tour.
“Montreal has been so good to me year in and year out, and the city has helped so much in establishing a fan base for me,” Maniscalco told me in an interview prior to his Stay Hungry shows here.
Staying hungry has been key to the success of the 45-year-old Chicago native. His early years in the biz were on the lean side, but he persisted to the point where he has become one of the 10 highest-grossing comics on the planet. And he has done so by playing it clean.
